08-25 Police took a missing person complaint where a subject had not been seen for several days. After an investigation it was determined the person was in another area, and no other action was needed.

08-26 A citizen found a bike on Highway 101 near Paradise Point Road and turned it in to the police department. The bike is described as a “Verticle” Fugitive BMX style bike. If you can identify the bike please come by the Police Station and get it.

08-26 Police took a complaint regarding several juveniles in violation of curfew. Both were contacted and cited into Municipal Court for curfew violations.

08-27 Police were contacted about intoxicated juveniles on Ninth Street at two locations. Several calls were received regarding loud and intoxicated people. Upon police arrival a large group of adults and juveniles were present fighting, being loud and causing a disturbance. Four officers from the Port Orford Police Department responded to the scene, and all subjects were detained for Disorderly Conduct. One juvenile age 12 was extremely intoxicated and appeared to be suffering from alcohol poisoning. Port Orford Ambulance responded and transported the youth to Curry General Hospital where he was held over night for observation. Two other female juveniles both 13 years old were intoxicated and were cited for Minor in possession of alcohol by consumption and Disorderly Conduct then released to responsible adults. Thomas Hagelstein was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, four counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor and recklessly endangering. Ryan Beech was arrested for probation violation. Jovita Houglum was arrested for Disorderly Conduct. All three were transported to the Curry County Jail. Jacob Willings was cited to appear in Circuit Court for Minor in Possession of Alcohol and Disorderly Conduct.  David Rhodes and Timothy Houglum were cited to appear in Circuit Court for Disorderly Conduct. The case is pending review by the Curry County District Attorney for other charges.

08-28 Police responded to Idaho and 12th Street on a call of an intoxicated male subject sleeping in someone’s yard. Upon contact the subject was found sleeping next to a rock. He was given a trespass warning and advised to leave the area and it was suggested that he return to his home in Coos County.

08-28 Police responded to 20th Street on a complaint of a male subject asleep next to the roadway. Upon arrival the subject from the earlier call was located. He was given a courtesy ride to a home on Port Orford Loop Road. No other calls received on this subject today.

08-28 Police took a criminal mischief complaint regarding a trailer that had been vandalized by someone leaving the water running inside for an extended period of time. The case is being investigated.

08-29 Police were contacted about an intoxicated subject near Knapp Road. Upon arrival it was surprisingly determined to be the same person from the day before. He was given a courtesy ride to Langlois where he was much closer to his home in Coos County. No other action needed.

Chiefs Note:  Remember that we are dispatched by Curry County Sheriff’s Office at either 911 or the non-emergency listed 800 number below. You can also contact any of your three officers on their cell phones as we take calls on our cellular phones and answer citizens questions anytime. My cellular number is listed below. If you don’t want to go through the dispatch center you can call me anytime, and I can help you. We provide 24 hour coverage seven days a week and have at least two officers ready to respond to any emergency situation. We also use our reserve officers to assist the on call officer. With the cut backs in our Sheriff’s Department they do not have the manpower to dedicate a deputy strictly to the north county for back-up so we relay on our own officers as backup. This way we don’t have to wait what might be a forty-five minute wait for a single deputy working the 1600 Square miles of Curry County. Our response to calls when no one is actually working is about 5 minutes so your community has very good law enforcement coverage, and the bad guys know that. Our reserves generally help as backup units, cold case investigations, and other criminal and traffic matters as they can. Remember they all have other jobs and give of their own free time. Reserve Officers are not paid but aid us in providing good law enforcement coverage when needed. Our department is working very well now with Sheriff John Bishop and his crew. Sheriff Bishop recently donated several tack strips to our department. Tack Strips are used to stop vehicles being pursued. They are placed onto the roadway and when the suspect vehicle runs over them they release small spikes into the vehicle tires causing the tires to slowly deflate which lessens the injury to anyone. Our department did not have any of these and it is very important to try and stop a suspect vehicle being pursued before it reaches Port Orford so we are very thankful to Sheriff Bishop for getting those for out department.

07-24 Police received a harassment complaint involving several people at the Post Office. A report and information was taken by police and the case is pending review by the Curry County District Attorney for criminal prosecution.

07-24 Police received a report of a 911 hang-up call at the pay phones at Circle K Market. The area was checked and no one was found.

07-24 Police responded to a fight in progress at the Anchor Inn at Ninth and Arizona Streets. All were counseled and no further action was required.

07-24 Police responded to a residence on a compliant of an open fire. The owner was advised not to burn because of the current burn ban and given a warning. No other action taken.

07-25 Police were contacted at the police station by a subject requesting a complaint for assault. A police report was taken and the case is under investigation.

07-26 Police received a report of a mental health emergency where a male subject was in need of medical help because he could not care for himself and his caregiver was in the hospital and no one was at the home to assist him. Thanks to Port Orford Fire Chief Wilcox, Mental Health and Bandon, and Gold Beach Hospital staff we were able to get the subject transported to Bandon Hospital by ambulance to get the needed medical assistance.

NOTE: The above case is a prime example of community policing at its best. Community policing is utilizing all available resources to solve a community problem whether or not it is a law enforcement issue. Thanks to the great working relationship we have with all emergency services personnel it makes it a lot easier to help solve these community problems and get the needed help to people as soon as possible.

07-28 Police took a criminal Trespass Complaint where a male subject had come into an establishment and caused a disturbance. The subject was given a trespass warning. No other action taken.

07-28 Police took a telephonic harassment complaint. The case is being investigated further.

07-29 Police took a report of an attempted theft wherein the victim was contacted by a person about property they wished to rent. The property owner was given a check for over the amount and asked if they could get the remainder in cash back. The would-be victim contacted police with the check. The check was from issued from a fictitious bank. The case is under investigation.

NOTE: it is always a good thing to contact police if there is any question. It is always better to be safe than sorry. In this case as in others the perpetrator sends a check for something you might be selling on the internet/newspaper/or on-line. You will receive a check covering the amount plus. The suspect wants you to send them back the extra monies and of course the check will be no good. Remember if it seems too good to be true it generally is.

07-30 Police assisted Port Orford Ambulance on a medical call on Agate Beach Road.

07-30 Police received a report from Circle K Market that a male subject stole an 18 pack of beer from the establishment and fled as an employee made chase. The employee contacted the suspect as the suspect entered a vehicle and drug the employee through the parking lot with his vehicle. The video tapes are being reviewed, and the case is being investigated. The description of the suspect vehicle is mid 80s Honda Civic without an engine hood. The male subject is described as 16 to 18 years old with light brown hair. This case is being investigated as a robbery, and attempt assault I because force was used to prevent the owner from re-acquiring their property. If anyone has any information about this case please contact Office Fink @253.7580.
Chiefs Note:  On August 1st the police department was going to start work on the new police department in the old library space but because of some council concerns that probably won’t take place now. Initially we were offered the library space to utilize for the police department because we have very little room in the existing one room police department, and no secure interview room. Over a year ago the council authorized us to move into the space but of course the problem was available money to remodel it. The estimate for remodeling was about $37,000.00 so because of limited funding I took the initiative get things going. Our Reserve Officers decided to volunteer their time to perform the labor, and we got some vender donations for materials which lowered the cost of remodel significantly to about $13,000.00. The plans which included a common meeting room were donated at a cost relief of about $1,200.00, and our building permits were significantly lowered from about $1,400.00 to $260.00 because one of our reserves Tyson Breuer is a contractor and can oversee the volunteer work. We had also received some additional donated furnishings, office equipment and even more donated materials. All I was waiting for from the council was a written confirmation to answer the question of whether the police can actually occupy the space once we have done all the work so there will be no confusion in the near future. Whatever the reasons I guess we’re stuck in the small office so on to other things. Thanks to everyone who donated and all that were going to assist us with the labor of the remodel.

07-04 Police responded in the early morning hours to a report of an exterior building alarm at Driftwood Elementary School. Upon arrival Police determined it was the Rotary Pancake Breakfast people that accidentally set it off. Too early for breakfast police went back to sleep.

07-04 Police and Port Orford Ambulance personnel responded to a residence on a report of a man down. Efforts to resuscitate failed and the man was pronounced dead. The case is pending notification of next of kin.

07-05 Police received a report that someone was changing their oil on the complainant’s side of the street.  Police contacted the subject and determined the oil was changed on that side of the street because it was easier for the oil changer to change his oil there. No other action taken.

07-05 Police received an anonymous complaint regarding a person operating a Dirt Bike on the back streets in Port Orford. A check of the subject determined that he has a suspended license. The case is pending contact with the violator very soon.

07-06 Police responded to 19th Street on a complaint that a gate to a residence was opened by unknown people during the night and the cats got out? Extra Patrol was initiated.

07-07 A citizen brought in a cellular telephone that was found about three months ago. If you are still missing your cell phone, please contact the police department.

Chiefs Note:  The Fourth of July was fairly uneventful. We had some minor problems on the beach with people driving their four-wheelers carelessly and one of our reserve officers drove the city four-wheeler done onto the beach and made casual contact which slowed everyone down. We had everyone working on the fourth to help curtail any potential problems. I would like to thank our reserve officers, Derwin Boggs, Patty Barnes, Tom Forgatsch, Randy Farr, Tyson Breuer, and Chris Bussmann for donating their time to keep our community secure over the holidays. Remember reserve officers are not paid for their time, and donate their personal time away from their families to help our citizens stay safe. I would also like to thank Port Orford, and Sixes Fire as well as Port Orford Ambulance for all their time, and being able to work well with all of us.  I would also like to thank Officer Fink and Officer Dresser for the great job they did.

Port Orford Police Participate in the Special Olympics Torch Run to Hillsboro

Submitted by Mark Creighton
Chief, POPD

The Law Enforcement Torch Run represents a long-standing tradition within the Special Olympics family. The last week of June, more than 200 officers from across Oregon will participate in a relay that will bring the Olympic Flame to Hillsboro Stadium. There, the torch will ignite the Special Olympics Oregon Cauldron that signifies the official beginning of the 2008 State Summer Games, presented by Les Schwab Tire Centers.

That weekend—June 27, 28 and 29—nearly 2,000 Special Olympics Oregon athletes, coaches and other volunteers will converge on Hillsboro to compete for Olympic medals and ribbons in softball, golf, bocce, track & field and gymnastics.  Athletes have been training for a minimum of eight weeks for the State Summer Games, and must have participated in one of many regional competitions to be eligible to compete this weekend.

Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is a year-round campaign in which officers support Special Olympics Oregon athletes by running the Torch, attending competitions, participating in medal ceremonies, and raising funds through special events so athletes can participate without fees in the sports offered by Special Olympics.  Last year, LETR raised nearly $200,000 for Special Olympics Oregon.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in Wichita, Kansas in 1981. Now a year-round global event, all 50 states and more than 30 foreign countries participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run relay.  In Oregon, more than 1,000 law enforcement personnel from federal, military, state, county and local agencies participate in the Torch Run, Special Olympics Oregon's largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness program. Each year law enforcement agencies participate by transporting the torch from Brookings to Hillsboro. According to Chief Creighton “The torch was brought to our agency by Gold Beach Police Chief Russ Merkley, and then our agency transported the torch to Bandon Police”. “This will be the first year that Port Orford Police participated in this important event and I’m glad that Patty Barnes volunteered to carry the torch to Bandon Police Department”.

Special Olympics Oregon is a year-round program offering a variety of Olympic-style sports to athletes with intellectual disabilities.  Thousands of athletes participate from around the state in Special Olympics programs. Through sport, Special Olympics athletes gain self-confidence, social competency and other enhanced skills, both physical and social.  For more information on Special Olympics Oregon, visit www.soor.org.

06-22 Police responded to a local business on a burglar alarm call. Upon arrival it was determined that the suspect(s) had pried the door open and entered the business setting off an alarm. Suspect(s) then fled the area. Nothing was missing but damage was done to the entry door. Three officers of the Police Department responded checking the area and other businesses. The case is pending further investigation.

06-22 a cellular telephone was brought to the Police Department that was found on Sixes River Road. The owner was located through telephone numbers in the phone and the phone was returned.

06-23 Police responded to a residence on a call of a disturbance. It was determined to be verbal only and the subjects were advised of the consequences and no other action was needed.

06-23 Police assisted a Curry County Sheriffs Deputy on a search for a felony wanted subject on Elk River Road. The subject had been causing some problems in the Port Orford area and had evaded custody in Port Orford. The suspect was not located but soon will be.

06-24 Police were contacted about a hit and run accident at Highway 101 and 13th Street where a subject in a black vehicle backed into a fence causing approximately $300.00 damage. The subject then left the area. Information was obtained from witness who observed the subject and incident and they advised the vehicle had left the area southbound on Highway 101. Curry County Sheriff’s Deputy Carpenter was in the area of Highway 101 and Humbug Canyon and responded north to locate the vehicle. Carpenter located a vehicle similar in description and after a traffic stop determined there was damage to it Carpenter escorted the subject and vehicle back to Port Orford where the subject was cited into Circuit Court for Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver with a fine of $7,500.00. The case is pending review by the Curry County District Attorney.

06-25 I was contacted by a concerned citizen about a horse at large on Jackson Street causing a traffic hazard. Unable to get out of my vehicle because of the size of the horse I contacted my wife Gerri who came to my aid. I observed that she used carrots to coax the horse into compliance so she could get a rope on it, and noted how well the carrots seemed to work. Then I recalled that she sometimes gives me carrots?

06-25 In working with the Curry County Sheriff’s Office new information was developed on a 1992 missing person Cold Case where Chrystal Ann Trawick / Mendoza was at a beauty salon having her hair done. She left the building, got into a vehicle and was never seen again. Port Orford Police and the Curry County Sheriff’s Office will be working jointly investigating the new information.

06-25 Police responded out on a call of a possible intoxicated driver. Police checked around town and the vehicle and drier were not located. Police were again contacted by a concerned citizen regarding the same vehicle observed earlier driving carelessly. Police again search the area and located the vehicle on Highway 101 near Port Orford Loop Road. Evaristo Lopez was arrested for Driving under the influence of Intoxicants. He was transported to the Curry County Jail where he was lodged for DUII. Lopez was additionally cited for several traffic infractions and for refusing the breath test. The case is pending review and prosecution by the Curry County District Attorney.

06-26 Police arrested Christopher Edwards for Possession of Controlled Substance Methamphetamine. He was transported to the Curry County jail and lodged on the offense.

Chiefs Note:  I hope everyone has a great time this weekend on the Fourth. We will have our officers out on patrol periodically during the weekend and available for any call-outs. Remember we will be closing the streets adjacent to Highway 101, and traffic will be detoured onto Jackson Street. Also again this year we will be closing 6th Street (Highway 101) at Jackson Street and again Jefferson Street. We have done these two years in a row now and it makes the end of the parade relatively safer for everyone. Also remember we will be closing the Battle Rock Beach to Access so if you’re going to park on the beach get there before 5:00 P. M.
